We use the latest technologies available to provide an up to date solution to your asset management requirements. .net is the latest of these technologies and below you will find a short explanation of exactly what that is.

The Microsoft .NET Framework allows different programming languages & libraries to work together seamlessly to create Windows-based applications that are easier to build, manage, deploy, and integrate with other networked systems. The Microsoft .NET Compact Framework is a key part of realizing Microsoft's goal to provide customers with great experiences—any time, any place, and on any device. The .NET Compact Framework enables the development of secure, downloadable applications on devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile phones.

The PDA versions of PlaySafe/StaySafe rely on the .NET "Compact" Framework, a scaled down version of the PC edition dubbed the ".NET Framework".  It uses version 1 of the .NET Compact Framework which is part of most mobile operating systems so it's been a transparent matter that we really haven't had to discuss.  However, the latest PDA version of PlaySafe/StaySafe uses version 2 of the .NET Compact Framework and version 1.1 of the .NET Framework (for the PC). It's time to explain what we're doing.

The .NET Framework is a great thing!  Some of the errors you have experienced on your PDAs are caused when some other software program that you install disregards versions of DLLs (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLLs for a definition of DLLs) on your computer.  For example, PlaySafe/StaySafe might use version 5 of a particular operating system DLL.  Then you install some more software on your PDA that, unknown to you, doesn't use a good installation system and it forcibly overwrites version 5 with version 4.  PlaySafe/StaySafe now gives errors. It can get quite complex, but the “common repository” of files in C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32 is not proving to be the best of ideas.  Along came the .NET Framework (remember, no Compact, so we're talking about the PC version) which now allows these great DLLs to be placed in the same folder as the application you're installing.  PlaySafe/StaySafe has its set of files and Application 2 has its, so they don't step on each other.  This is just one of the main benefits of the .NET Framework.

The .NET Framework is a "runtime engine" that is used to power applications developed for use with this .NET Framework.  A runtime engine is not new; PlaySafe uses a runtime engine.  In order for PlaySafe/StaySafe to run on your PDA, it requires a runtime engine to work.  Therefore, the .NET Compact Framework version 2 is required for use with PlaySafe/StaySafe on a PDA, which is free from Microsoft.  The version of PlaySafe on your PC (you have upgraded, haven't you?) has a PDA installer that combines PlaySafe and the .NET Compact Framework.

On your PC, PlaySafe/StaySafe uses the .NET Framework, which is available in three versions (with a fourth just announced):  version 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 (with 3.0 just announced for Windows Vista).  Typically, version 2.0 will work for 1.1 applications (which also holds true on the PDA). However, both can be installed on your computer, and actually should be installed to make sure everything works just right.  You can get the .NET Framework for your PC simply by going to Windows Update.  Click "Custom" (instead of Express) so you can see both the critical and optional updates when checking for Windows Updates.  If you see either Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 or 2.0, go ahead and install them, you will need them some day, not only for PlaySafe/StaySafe, but other products as well.

This may have been a little confusing but the main thing to understand is there are two versions of this .NET Framework:  .NET Framework for your PC (Windows) and.NET Compact Framework for your PDA (Windows Mobile).
